Are you looking for a social story about going to the bathroom, or an activity to teach someone the toileting sequence?
A social story can be a powerful tool for teaching someone how to use the bathroom.
It is a way to explain the process step-by-step in a way that is easy to understand.
It can also provide reassurance to the person that they are doing the right thing.
This social story begins by introducing two types of washrooms:
1. a private washroom with one toilet, and
2. a public washroom with stalls.
The concept of closing the main door, or the stall door, for privacy, is taught.
Then, the toileting sequence is broken down, step by step in clear, direct language.
Each page explains only one step, and includes a clear visual to help the reader make the connection between the written step and the action being described.
Clear language is used to teach them how they will wipe if they go pee, and how they would wipe differently (and exactly how), if they go poo.
The words pee and poo are used instead of language like “go to the bathroom” or “use the bathroom” as they are more specific. Language that is more specific will be less confusing to the student,
This story is available is both full color, and black and white, and comes with a printing guide to let you know exactly which pages to print for each.
This is great if you don’t have access to color ink when printing, but it also makes it possible to make the book into a coloring activity for students.
It is easy to prep! All pages have been placed next to each other so less cuts are needed.
If prepping the full color book, simple print, cut, laminate and bind it either with a binding comb, or use a holepunch to create holes in each corner, and use a binding ring to fasten the pages together.
This method allows you to add and remove pages to customize the story based on your specific student’s needs.
If you are prepping a black and white copy, you can simply print the document, cut the pages, and fasten them together by adding a few staples along the left side.
This social story is available for purchase through this website, and on Teachers Pay Teachers.
